Anova Health Institute is committed to improving healthcare access and outcomes for vulnerable populations, particularly those at high risk for HIV infection. Established as a non-profit organization, Anova focuses on providing services and support to marginalized communities in South Africa, with a particular emphasis on addressing the needs of people living with HIV and key populations such as men who have sex with men (MSM), sex workers, and other high-risk groups.
Through strategic partnerships with government health departments, community-based organizations (CBOs), and other stakeholders, Anova plays a critical role in addressing the country’s HIV epidemic and improving health outcomes for at-risk communities.

The Social Worker Role at Anova Health Institute
Position Overview:
Anova Health Institute is currently looking for a Social Worker to join their team in the province of Mpumalanga. This position will focus on providing integrated developmental social welfare services to vulnerable men who have sex with men (MSM), who are often marginalized and disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic. The role is permanent and will involve working in close collaboration with a variety of health and social service professionals, including social auxiliary workers, counsellors, and nurses, to ensure comprehensive care and support for MSM in the region.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Support Implementation of the MSM HIV Programme: One of the primary duties of the Social Worker will be to support the implementation of the MSM HIV Programme within the province. This involves engaging directly with MSM communities to promote HIV prevention, testing, and treatment, and to provide ongoing support for individuals living with HIV. The Social Worker will be expected to tailor interventions to meet the specific needs of MSM, ensuring culturally competent and effective care.
Provide Integrated Social Welfare Services: The Social Worker will provide holistic and integrated developmental social welfare services to vulnerable MSM. This may include psychosocial support, case management, and assistance with accessing health services, as well as advocating for the rights and well-being of MSM individuals. The role is key in addressing the social determinants of health, such as stigma, discrimination, and marginalization, that exacerbate vulnerability to HIV among MSM.
Strengthen Referral Linkages: Strengthening referral linkages is a critical component of this role. The Social Worker will work to ensure that MSM are connected to relevant health services, both within Anova’s network and in external health facilities and CBOs. These linkages are essential for improving service access and ensuring continuity of care. By strengthening these connections, the Social Worker helps create a more integrated and supportive care environment for individuals at risk of or living with HIV.
Oversee MSM Adherence Support Groups: Another important responsibility is overseeing the implementation of MSM adherence support groups. These groups are crucial for ensuring that MSM living with HIV are receiving the support they need to adhere to antiretroviral therapy (ART). The Social Worker will coordinate these groups, facilitate meetings, and provide ongoing support to participants, helping them navigate the challenges of living with HIV and maintaining treatment regimens.
Support Outreach Teams and Case-Finding Activities: The Social Worker will support outreach teams, counsellors, and professional nurses in conducting case-finding activities at antiretroviral therapy (ART) sites. This involves identifying individuals who may be at risk of HIV or are already living with HIV but have not yet accessed treatment. The Social Worker will assist with outreach efforts to engage these individuals and provide them with necessary support and resources.
Identify Training Needs and Capacity Building: As part of their role, the Social Worker will be responsible for identifying training needs and facilitating capacity building for staff within Anova, Department of Health (DoH) facilities, CBOs, and other relevant stakeholders. This may involve organizing workshops, training sessions, and creating educational materials to enhance the capacity of the workforce to better serve MSM and other vulnerable populations.

Attend Stakeholder Meetings: Collaboration with other stakeholders is a key part of the Social Worker’s role. This includes attending regular stakeholder meetings, such as facility or sub-district management meetings. The Social Worker will represent Anova and contribute to discussions related to the implementation of health and social welfare services, advocating for the needs of MSM and other high-risk groups.
Supervision and Management of Social Auxiliary Workers and Counsellors: The Social Worker will also be responsible for supervising Social Auxiliary Workers and Counsellors, ensuring they are effectively supporting MSM and other vulnerable individuals. This includes providing guidance, mentoring, and ensuring that the team is functioning effectively to meet the needs of the population they serve.
Other Tasks: The Social Worker will be expected to perform other tasks as agreed upon with the line manager, contributing to the overall success of Anova’s HIV and social welfare programs.
Required Qualifications, Experience, and Skills
Educational Qualifications:
Bachelor of Social Science (Social Work) or a relevant qualification is required for this role. A degree in social work provides a foundation for understanding the psychological, social, and emotional aspects of individuals’ lives, which is critical in providing appropriate services to MSM and other vulnerable groups.
Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP): All applicants must be registered with SACSSP, as this is a legal requirement for practicing social work in South Africa. Registration ensures that the social worker adheres
