Job Description
Position Summary:
The role of a General Worker – Maintenance involves performing essential tasks related to maintaining cleanliness and functionality within the abattoir’s various areas. This includes working in the DAF unit area, feather area, sump area, and other sections of the abattoir. The job requires adherence to specific policies and procedures, with a focus on ensuring operational efficiency and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Cleaning and Maintenance:
- Perform regular cleaning of the DAF unit, feather press, sump pit, and feather area to ensure they are free from debris and operational waste.
- Maintain cleanliness in all relevant areas, including the sump pit room and feather area, to support smooth operations.
- Equipment Management:
- Ensure that all machinery and equipment are thoroughly washed and maintained.
- Report any damaged or broken machines and equipment to the shift controllers promptly.
- Assist in inspecting and repairing broken shackles and yokes of the airline chiller during start-ups.
- Operational Support:
- Monitor and ensure that all machines are functioning correctly throughout the production cycle.
- Report any equipment failures or malfunctions immediately to avoid production delays.
- Assist in replacing plucker fingers during scheduled maintenance, particularly on weekends.
- Quality Assurance:
- Ensure all valves, scrapers, screens, and pumps are in good working condition.
- Prepare and maintain the sump pit room and water sieve unit to be ready for production start-up.
Requirements
Educational Qualifications:
- Grade 12 or an equivalent qualification (NQF Level 4).
Physical and Mental Fitness:
- Ability to work in warm and potentially pungent environments typical of an abattoir setting.
- Good physical condition to handle the physical demands of the job, including standing for extended periods.
Work Schedule and Flexibility:
- Willingness to work overtime, including shifts, weekends, and holidays as required.
Skills and Competencies:
- Basic understanding of production procedures within an abattoir environment.
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and under pressure.
