About the Earth Systems Science Internship

The CSIR annually offers linked Internship-Studentships through SOCCO, an interdisciplinary programme hosted by Smart Places. These internships cover a range of disciplines addressing the research needs of earth systems science, focusing on ocean carbon dynamics. Successful interns will have the opportunity to qualify for the studentship programme, apply for an NRF bursary, and gain admission to a university. These opportunities are based in Cape Town.

Focus Areas

  • Ocean Biogeochemistry: Study of phytoplankton primary production in relation to varying nutrients, temperature, and light.
  • Ocean Physics-Carbon: Examination of the physical dynamics of the Southern Ocean and their influence on CO2 flux, and the links between fine-scale dynamics and large-scale carbon-climate sensitivities.

Requirements

To qualify for the Earth Systems Science Internship at CSIR, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Education: An Honours degree in biological sciences, computer science, statistics, oceanography, mathematics, physics, or chemistry.
  • Skills:
    • Basic computer science and coding experience (e.g., Matlab/Python) is advantageous.
    • Understanding of basic statistics for processing large datasets is advantageous.
    • Knowledge of data processing, analysis, and visualisation on Python is beneficial.
    • Effective communication skills (oral, written, and presentation).
    • Ability to work independently and under pressure.
