Shoprite is calling on suitable graduates who are interested in joining its Industrial/Organizational Psychology Internship for 2021. Be sure to check the minimum eligibility requirements before submitting an application.

As the largest food retailer in Africa, Shoprite operates 2,843 stores in 15 countries on the African continent. This includes Shoprite outlets in the Indian Ocean Islands. In 2018, the retail giant employed 147,478 individuals. Shoprite’s corporate headquarters is located in Western Cape, South Africa. As a publicly listed company, Shoprite Holdings Ltd. trades in the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and owns secondary listings in the Zambian and Namibian Stock Exchange.

Shoprite started out in 1979. Its outlet in Namibia opened in 1990. The company expanded rapidly and acquired a good number of retail chains such as Checkers and distributor Sentra, to mention a few. The acquisition enabled the company to venture into franchising later on. It also bought OK Bazaars from South African Breweries, 146 adding furniture stores and 157 supermarkets while saving over 14,000 jobs.

In 2018, Shoprite managed to rank 94th in Deloitte Global Powers of Retail Report of the biggest retailers in the world and is 62 spots ahead of its closest rival. In addition, the Shoprite Group was able to improve total turnover to R145.3 billion, which is 3.1% higher in the 12 months of testing trading conditions. The company also posted a 2.7% positive volume growth and a 3.3% growth in customer base.

Shoprite Industrial/Organisational Psychology Internship 2021

The programme seeks to provide interns a comprehensive understanding of Organizational Development/Industrial Psychology through the actual application of theoretical knowledge leading to an I/O Psychologist certification by the end of the internship.

The successful candidate will be under the direct supervision of registered Industrial Psychologists. The incumbent’s university will be serve as the supervising university for the programme.

Successful completion of the programme will entitle the intern to an opportunity to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

Lastly, the incumbent will acquire exposure in the following areas:

  • Human Resource Psychology
  • Organizational Psychology
  • Career Psychology/Employee Wellness
  • Electives and Professional Ethics
  • Testing and Assessment

Who should apply?

  • Must have completed their master’s dissertation in Industrial or Organizational Psychology by December 2020
  • Registered as a student or intern psychologist with the HPCSA
  • Must have acquired own supervisor from the university that will provide academic supervision during the internship
  • A South African national
  • Experience in HR functions and processes will be a big plus
  • Solid written and oral communication skills
  • Good research and analytical skills
  • Effective in time management
  • Excellent team player with good interpersonal skills
  • Keen attention to details
  • Proactive
  • Has a good working knowledge of Google Suite
